Buongiorno Onceuponiani, 

oggi voglio parlarvi del primo volume della duologia The Sheperd King di Rachel Gillig. Eh tanta tanta tanta roba, davvero bellissimo... Merita di essere letto ed è un vero peccato che nessuna delle case editrici italiane abbia pensato a portarcelo!

Quando ho letto le recensioni di questo romanzo, c'era un  elemento veniva ripetuto: Rachel Gillig ha costruito un nuovo sistema magico unico nel suo genere che non si è mai visto finora.  

Dovete sapere che in questo mondo, la magia risiede in 12 carte. Ognuna delle quali permette a chi le possiede di avere diversi poteri. Per esempio ci sarà la Fanciulla che donerà bellezza e grazia a chi la possiede, ma anche spietatezza; ci sarà il Cavallo Nero che donerà velocità. E così via..  

Suddenly it became bitterly clear: The infection had not spared me. I had magic. Strange, awful magic. All it had taken was a touch. Just a touch of my finger on velvet, and I had absorbed something from within my uncle’s Nightmare Card. Just a single touch, and its power stalked the corners of my mind, trapped.

At first, I thought I had absorbed the Card itself—its magic. But despite all my efforts, I could not speak into the minds of others. I could speak to only the voice—the monster, the Nightmare. I pored over The Old Book of Alders until I knew it by heart, searching for answers. Oltre alle carte altra peculiarità di questo mondo saranno i cosiddetti infetti. Ovvero tutti coloro che sono sopravvissuti alla febbre. Febbre che lascerà loro dei poteri. Proprio per questi poteri il Re cercherà di sppprimerli. Indovinate un po' chi sarà una sopravvissura? La nostra protagonista Elspeth Spindle. Il suo dono sarà quello di poter assorbire le carte (non voglio andare nel dettaglio). E assorbirà la carta Incubo. Carta rappresentata da una belva simile ad un lupo nero con gli occhi gialli. 

“A bit late for that, isn’t it?”

The corners of his lips curled. “It’s just that, sometimes when I look at you, I feel like I know you—understand you. And other times…” His brow furrowed. “Your eyes flash a strange yellow color. I feel a stillness about you I do not recognize. A darkness.”

When I remained silent, cold to my bones, the Captain’s voice remained gentle. “The truth is,” Ravyn said, patting his horse, “there is darkness in all of us. We don’t need The Old Book of Alders to tell us that. You and I carry the infection and, with it, strange, brilliant magic. But there’s always a price. Nothing comes for free.”

Ci sarà un prezzo da pagare però ogni qualvolta che si usano le carte. E lo stesso succede anche con la nostra Elspeth. Ovviamente non voglio darvi altri indizi e piccoli spoilers. Ma sappiate che questo romanzo finirà con un finale super shock che mi ha lasciato agitata tutto il giorno. 

Mi è davvero piaciuto questo romanzo.. La trama piuttosto intricata che non voglio svelarvi, mai banale. Il metodo di scrittura dell’autrice. Ma soprattutto tutti i vari personaggi.

Quindi non capisco davvero perché le case editrici non cerchino di portare queste chicche in Italia. È un vero peccato! Quindi sì se verrà pubblicato anche in italiano DOVETE ASSOLUTAMENTE leggerlo ed averlo. 

È un romanzo che ha tutto: amore, dolcezza, magia, potere, coraggio, paura, sopravvivenza, tradimenti, intrighi, etc etc… Insomma, Rachel non so se leggerai mai questa recensione, ma sappi che ti meriti 100000 stelle!!
